You Are Always Watched Over
I was driving home with my kids one day, just trying to get through the day, when a song came on the radio. It said this,
When did He break His promise?
When did His kindness fail?
Never has, never will
My God is still the same
When did He lose His power?
When did His mercy change?
Not once did He ever stop moving
...has He ever let go
...did He ever stop proving
He is in control
Just ask the words
You prayed in desperation if they're heard
They'll say my God is still the same
Ask the grave
If it's strong enough to keep hope in it's chains
It'll say, "God is still the same"
Right after it came a song that said,
It doesn't matter how far you've gone
Mercy says you don't have to keep running down the road you're on
Love's never met a lost 'cause
Your shame, lay it down
Leave your ghosts in the past 'cause you know that you can't go back
But you can turn around
You've never been more than one step away
so lay down your old chains
Come now, and take up your new name
These words struck me. It was one of those moments you know was meant just for you. I had been struggling with feeling that God had been absent. Which I know now has more to do with my posture than his.
So often we are the ones holding onto the shame of where we've been or where we are now. And it's easy to question why or how we would be accepted and told we're free from our guilt. That's it's somehow washed away by Jesus. When we feel the very real effects of the rotten choices we make.
Your desperate words are heard. And the God who stayed near and caring for every person whose story you read in Scripture, He is still the same today. And if you've been a believer and seen God move in the past, remind yourself tonight that He is still the same today. You are not, he knew you wouldn't be. But He is. And he's moving in clear, magnificent ways - even when you feel you're floundering and fluttering about like an octopus.
Even when you can't hear him. Even when you can't feel Him. He is behind the scenes of your life, always watching out, always guiding, always teaching. Always merciful. Always kind. Always near.
When everything in our world feels wobbly. Let's remind ourselves what is the truest of truths. Let's delight ourselves in thanking God for who he is and that all he says is true.
Nevertheless, I am continually with you;
you hold my right hand.
You guide me with your counsel,
and afterward you will receive me to glory.Psalm 73:23-24
